12 Summer Date Ideas in the Omaha Area

July 15, 2016Add a CommentPosted By

There are so many date night options in the area that allow you to enjoy a concert together, learn culinary skills as a couple, or stroll through an art museum hand in hand. However, summer in Omaha calls for a different set of activities.

While the sun is shining brighter and the days are a little longer, it’s time to explore some of the best summertime date options in the Omaha area.

Enjoy a Cruise at Heartland of America Park

The Heartland Gondolas at Heartland of America Park offer rides for 2–6 people in authentic Venetian gondolas through the park’s 15-acre lake. For just $10 per couple, you can enjoy a 15–20 minute ride to the south part of the ConAgra Lagoon. While you might not mind joining a group, you can make the experience more intimate by scheduling a private cruise for $20 per couple or $35 for an extended 30-minute cruise. Schedule a reservation via email or phone to ensure two seats on a gondola.

The gondolas only operate between May and September, which means you must capitalize on this romantic and scenic experience while you still can!

Sit on the Rooftop Patio at 1912

Soak in the summer sun with a casual date on the rooftop patio at 1912, an innovative bar located in the historic Benson neighborhood. This space offers amazing views of Benson, some shade under a pergola, and plenty of seating to ensure you and your date a spot.

The building that houses 1912 was built in 1912, much like many historic buildings in the area. The rustic and exposed-brick-and-beam interior makes you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time, but the food and drinks on 1912’s menu are anything but outdated.

The items on their food menu are locally sourced and freshly made, featuring starters, sandwiches, burgers and even poutine! 1912 is particularly known around town for their incredible drinks. Select one of their 25 beers on tap, innovative cocktails, or hand-crafted margaritas to sip on during your sweet summertime date on 1912’s rooftop patio.

Play Disc Golf at Hummel Park Disc Golf Course

You might get tired just thinking about doing something active for a date during the summer. Thankfully, disc golfing is a more leisurely approach to physical activity, allowing you to play at your own pace, rest under shade, and enjoy the surrounding beauty all the while.

Play a round of disc golf as a couple at Hummel Park Disc Golf Course, with 18 holes spread out across the beautiful varied terrain at Hummel Park. Because this activity is free, it won’t be as much of a financial burden to purchase some gear before you hit the park. Head to the Disc Store in Omaha for everything you might need during your date, which you can reuse again and again on future disc golf adventures!

Paddle Around Zorinsky Lake

Go on a peaceful and romantic boat ride around Zorinsky Lake! This is another cost-effective date option, as you will simply need to rent supplies or gear if you don’t have some already, and entrance to the lake is of course free.

You can even rent paddling gear from the University of Nebraska Omaha. Or you can take things to the next level with a stand up paddleboard ride around the lake with Driftwood Paddle Adventures!

Take Them Out…to the Ball Game

Couples have been spending date nights at the ballpark for generations, as it’s an exciting atmosphere teeming with activity. Going to a Storm Chasers game is a carefree date destination that allows you to a warm summer night in Papillion with your loved one by your side!

The Storm Chasers are playing home games all the way through Labor Day weekend. Check out their schedule to get tickets for you and your sweetheart!

Get a Sweet Treat at eCreamery

eCreamery is one of our favorite ice cream shops in the area. This boutique parlor in the heart of Dundee has gained attention from the Omaha World-Herald, ABC’s “Shark Tank,” The New York Times, The Oprah Magazine, Martha Stewart Living, EveryDay with Rachael Ray, Esquire, ESPN and more!

Escape to a Romantic Cabin

Maybe these ideas just aren’t extravagant enough for you and your loved one, as you want to spend a little more time together than a quick night out on the town.

Get away from it all within a cabin near the Platte River nestled in the woods at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park. This “destination” is only about 30 minutes from Omaha, but will make you feel like you’re far, far away with no cares in the world!

Turn date night into a date weekend with this summertime cabin adventure, where you can spend your day hiking, picnicking, kayaking, biking and bird watching. And relax after all the activity in the privacy of your own cabin located in the beautiful natural surroundings at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park! Plan your getaway several weekends in advance, as cabins tend to fill up quickly — especially during the summer.

Listen to Live Music — For Free!

There are so many free summer concerts on the horizon for Omaha and its surrounding communities, many of which occur on a weekly basis throughout the summer! This is the perfect cost-effective way to spend date night together, enjoying live music, a peaceful summer night, and local food truck fare — or a picnic setup from home! Enjoy a fun and laid-back evening experiencing the unique creative culture of this area as a couple.

Admire Plant Life at Local Gardens

During the summer, you’ll notice more and more flowers and plants popping up all over town. One of the more concentrated locations for viewing these beauties up close and personal is at a local arboretum or garden.

Walk hand-in-hand with your significant other through the OPPD Arboretum or Lauritzen Gardens. The OPPD Arboretum is an outdoor education area located at 108th and Blondo Streets and is open to the public from dawn until dusk. The Lauritzen Gardens is a living museum filled with unique four-season plant displays.

A visit to either of these gorgeous grounds (with free admission!) is a romantic and relaxing way to spend your summertime date.

Enjoy Brunch on the Outdoor Patio at Dario’s Brasserie

Dario’s Brasserie is simply one of the best dining destinations in town, serving beer, wine and simple hearty food at their informal French cafe in the heart of Dundee. The chef and owner, Dario Schicke, is inspired by his European upbringing, passion for Belgian food and beer, and French culinary training. He brings an exceptional combination of all three experiences to the table at his restaurant.

Get your palates prepared with a peek at their delectable brunch menu, featuring authentic French and Belgian dishes like crepes, les moules, Eggs Benedicts, Belgian Toast and more.

Act Like Kids Again at the Zoo

What is a list of summertime date activities without mention of the local zoo? It’s only right we suggest a visit to the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium, as it was named the best zoo in the entire world. Pack on the sunscreen and head to the zoo with your date, no matter your age! You’ll love taking in the sights and sounds of the many world-class animal exhibits if you’re new to the area, or admiring brand new exhibits if you’ve been to this zoo before.

This famous Omaha attraction makes for a fun date excursion any time of the year — especially during the summer!

Go on a Omaha-Centric Scavenger Hunt

Embark on an interactive scavenger hunt as a couple by following the giant blue push pins placed all over town at unique Omaha attractions appealing to a wide range of interests. This is an especially valuable date experience if you and your scavenger hunt partner are new to the area or find yourself needing a refresher course in local attractions!
