St. Patrick’s Day is coming up! And to get you ready for it, Omaha is starting the celebrations as early as March 4. Beginning next week, continuing through parade day and then St. Patrick’s Day the following Friday, Omaha and Lincoln will be filled with green costumes, themed family-friendly activities, live music, Irish food and plenty of beer!
If the plethora of St. Paddy’s Day options have you overwhelmed, the most important one is the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade through Old Market. Throughout the entire year, this festive parade is one of the region’s most popular. So come out on March 11 with your green hats, outfits and dancing shoes to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day the only way Omaha knows how — a party!
2,500 green-clad runners line up in the SAC hangar, the door opens, the buzzer sounds and the lasses take off! Then, five and a half minutes later, the lads begin the chase! Whoever crosses the finish line first, wins a free beer for their whole gender at the Green Beer After Party.
Each year, proceeds from this event go to multiple local charities. For 2017, the race is benefitting the Nebraska Sports Council, Elmwood-Murdock Spirit Squad, Kiwanis Club of Bellevue, Trinity United Methodist Church and Elmwood Community Park Fund.
Come to the Green Beer After Party to see who wins each race category and who takes home the gold for best dressed. Or, volunteer to make race day a smashing success!
The most-anticipated St. Paddy’s event in Omaha is the Annual AOH St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Wear your green costumes and line the streets of Old Market to celebrate Irish culture and revel like you’re in Dublin! Or, grab a seat at the official viewing stands located at The Old Chicago and O’Connor’s Irish Pub downtown.
Once the leprechauns, organizations and Omaha locals finish parading, meet them all at the parade post-party! Hosted by AOH Father Flanagan Division, this event is the most authentic Irish celebration every year. You’ll find live Irish music, food and plenty of celebration!
One of Omaha’s favorite local craft breweries is celebrating with their annual Barrett’s Irish Red Lager! If everything goes according to plan, the lager will be tapped and ready for the festivities on parade day. Then, stop by Friday for traditional Irish food specials to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day even more!
Red Dirt Running Company is hosting Lincoln’s classic St. Patrick’s Day 5K this year. Decked out in green, runners explore the RailYard and end with a lively after party. Complete with Irish music, costume contest, photo booth and food specials, this event is a can’t miss for runners and revelers alike. Each registered participant will receive a shirt, free beer and a commemorative medal so register today!
Omaha Public Library is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day the best way it knows how — with story time! This family-friendly event is recommended for children aged 3 – 5 though everyone is welcome. The event will feature stories, activities, creative movements and songs more challenging than those found in Toddler Storytimes and participation is highly encouraged!
Keep the themed fun going on St. Patrick’s Day with a lunch full of Irish spirit! Inside the greenest place in town, you can taste corned beef and cabbage, boiled potatoes and Irish soda bread for just $7.50 while surrounded by the sounds of Irish music and the city’s most lush gardens. Admission to the gardens is required.
On St. Patrick’s Day, stop by Saddlebrook Branch to make and take home a fun, themed craft! Come early or stay after for Music & Movement, a program focused on literacy through song, dance and play designed for active toddlers and their participating caregivers.
The Bourbon Theater is celebrating with live music from local folk-punk band The Killigans alongside guests Bullet Proof Hearts, Bogusman and Wolf Dealer. This 21 and over event is the perfect place to get rowdy and dance all night. For just $8 in advance and $10 on the day of the show, you can do just that!
