Candy, costumes and fall fun add up to create one of our favorite holidays: Halloween! If your version of this spooky holiday doesn’t include the monsters, goblins and ghouls, this is the guide for you. We found 29 family-friendly events to keep you and your kids happy and filled with enough candy to last until Thanksgiving.
So get your costumes ready early (the dog, too!) and head out to these Halloween events happening in Omaha, Council Bluffs, La Vista, Papillion, Bellevue and other Omaha area communities. You might even win a few costume contests and kiss a pug while you’re out and about.
September 29 – October 31 | Omaha Children’s Museum
For little ones who want all the Halloween thrills, but no big scares, the Cobweb Castle is the best place to go. Available throughout the season, you can wander through the unique, Halloween castle inside Omaha Children’s Museum and experience all-new attractions for 2018.
October 13 – 28, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. | Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium
Several nights throughout October, the Omaha Zoo celebrates Halloween after hours. Buy tickets in advance for a chance to see the free flying bats in Lied Jungle and the Kingdoms of the Night nocturnal animals while enjoying many other Halloween and kid-friendly events. You can even meet with and learn about various zoo animals, and take home a balloon replica from one of the Omaha balloon artists that will be in attendance. Make sure everyone brings their own bag to collect candy throughout the zoo!
October 14 – 31, various times | Hollywood Candy
Hollywood Candy hosts free movie screenings in their theater throughout the year, but the Halloween-themed fun kicks off on October 14th with a free screening of It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. The fun continues with Back to the Future, The Twilight Zone, Once Bitten and Hocus Pocus on select dates through October 31st. For full details, check out the Hollywood Candy Facebook page.
October 20, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. | One Pacific Place
The shopping center, One Pacific Place, is celebrating Halloween early with free trick-or-treating at participating businesses, meet and greets with superhero characters, balloon artists, and plenty of hot apple cider.
Trick-or-Treat with the Animals of Gifford Farm | Bellevue
October 20, 10 a.m. | Gifford Farm Education Center
The area’s destination for outdoor education experiences, Gifford Farm is hosting a trick-or-treat event with the farm animals. Food concessions will be available and hayrides will be running all day long!
October 20 – 21 and 26 – 31, various times | Cabela’s
The La Vista Cabela’s is hosting their annual Great Pumpkin Celebration for eight full days. Bring the whole family in costume to this festive event where kids can enjoy free commemorative photos and festive crafts. For information on event hours, check out the website.
October 20 – 21 and 26 – 31, various times | Bass Pro Shops
The Bass Pro Shops Halloween Event is a can’t-miss if your kids love crafts and candy. Offering different activities and attractions each day, the week of fun includes free photos, cookie decorating, games, trick-or-treating, a costume parade, and more. For full details, check out the website.
October 20, 1 – 3 p.m. | Fort Atkinson State Historical Park
With your park entry permit, your family can enjoy hayrack rides in the prairie and other fall-themed fun on October 20th at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park.
October 20, 6 – 9 p.m. | Omaha Children’s Museum
On October 20th at Omaha Children’s Museum, you can join in the fun with friendly monsters and costumed characters at Monster’s Masquerade. Kids and their parents are welcome to dance to The Beatles cover band, make crafts and enjoy a light dinner. Don’t forget your costumes! Buy your tickets here.
October 20, 8 – 10 p.m. | Mt Crescent Ski Area
This all-ages night run through Mt Crescent Ski Area includes an after-party with DJ Spooky Chris, glow sticks and fire pits, free candy for the kiddos, and themed cocktails for the adults. Wear your costumes and your headlamps — and register online here.
October 21 and 28, 2 – 4 p.m. | Camp Fontanelle
One of Omaha’s favorite destinations every fall, Camp Fontanelle is upping the seasonal fun on October 21st by filling their maze with sweet treats. Other activities include puppet shows, zip lining, laser tag, hayrides, campfires, a petting barn, a lawnmower train, cow roping and you-pick pumpkins!
October 23, 5 – 8 p.m. | The Durham Museum
The Durham Museum is celebrating Halloween on October 23rd with their annual trick-or-treat event. A unique experience, you’ll wander through the museum, meeting historical characters and collecting candy along the way. The creepy museum curator will be displaying artifacts and guests can play Boo Bowling, Witch Hat Toss and Frankenstein Operation. View the event on Facebook for full details.
October 23 and 30, 5:30 – 8 p.m. | Omaha Children’s Museum
On October 23rd and again on Halloween night, Omaha Children’s Museum is hosting an indoor trick-or-treat event complete with healthy treats and non-food goodies. The event is included with regular museum admission and is free for members.
October 26, 5 p.m. | Two Rivers State Recreation Area
Inside Two Rivers State Recreation Area, meet at Lakeside Campground for a meet, greet and eat event that also includes Halloween-themed face painting and festive hayrack rides.
October 26, 5 – 8 p.m. | Werner Park
Hosted by the Omaha Storm Chasers, Baseballoween is a free, family-friendly event inside Werner Park complete with movies on the video board, candy stations, Halloween games, magicians, clowns and more!
October 26, 6 – 9 p.m. | Oak View Mall
Oak View Mall and Southwest YMCA are teaming up for this trick-or-treat event. Throughout the mall, you can enjoy free treat bags and candy, games, crafts, a costume contest and a dance-off competition!
October 27, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. | Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum
Learn about your favorite modes of transportation (and get some early trick-or-treating done) at this family-friendly event. The Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum will display various automobiles and kiddos are welcome to come in their Halloween costumes to trick-or-treat with their families for Super Hero Day during Planes, Trains and Autos.
October 27, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. | Tree Adventure at Arbor Day Farm
Arbor Day Farm is celebrating the fall season all month long with their Harvest Celebration and U-Pick Apples, but on October 27th, you’re invited to increase the fun at the Halloween Pumpkin Party. Included with regular admission, this event will include face painting, hayrack rides, free candy treats, crafts, trips through the corn maze, themed hikes and more.
October 27, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. | Union Pacific Railroad Museum
The Union Pacific Railroad Museum always offers free admission — and on Halloween that comes with free trick-or-treating, too! Check out the Facebook event for more details.
October 27, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. | Village Pointe
In partnership with Susan G. Komen, Omaha’s Great Pumpkin Festival at Village Pointe will include pumpkin carving, Halloween Fun Day with trick-or-treating, characters and games, a live concert, and the great pumpkin tree lighting ceremony.
October 27, 10 a.m. | Camp Fontanelle
For this fun 5k race, costumed runners are taken on a trip through Camp Fontanelle to see areas not many people have visited. In addition to this 5k wilderness race, there will be a 1.25-mile walk also open to all. For more information, check out the website.
October 27, 12 and 2 p.m. | River City Star
Suitable for all ages, this Halloween-themed cruise along the Missouri River will feature a trick-or-treat bag for every child wearing a costume, as well as Witches Brew and fun, scary snacks at the concession stand. For registration information, check out the River City Star website.
October 28, 12 – 4 p.m. | Lauritzen Gardens
The Ghoulish Garden Adventure includes both indoor and outdoor activities where you can learn about the mysteries of nature, get up close and personal with amazing fall creatures, and make your very own crafts to take home. Activities are included with $10 garden admission for adults and $5 for children 6 – 12.
October 28, 12 – 4 p.m. | Army National Guard
Pug Partners of Nebraska is celebrating their 10th Annual Pug-O-Ween with a family-friendly and dog-friendly celebration. All breeds of dog and all families are welcome to compete in costume contests, enjoy the pug kissing booth, watch pug races and more. Purchase your tickets here.
October 28, 1 – 4 p.m. | The Old Market
Dress in costume for this family-friendly event in Omaha’s Old Market where your whole family can enjoy trick-or-treating, interactive displays from Omaha Police Department, Omaha Fire Department and Metro Transit Omaha, face painting, horse carriage rides, a pet costume contest, and more!
October 29, 5 – 6:30 p.m. | Regency Court
All kids and families are welcome at Regency Court on Monday, October 29th for free trick-or-treating at your favorite Regency stores. Guests can also meet Bat Hero, Spider Hero and Wonderful Woman!
October 30, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. | Montclair Community Center and Pool
The day before Halloween, you can start trick-or-treating early at the Montclair Community Center. Wear your best costume and come by for this free event complete with games, activities and, of course, candy.
October 31, 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. | W. Dale Clark (Main) Library
Omaha Public Library will be hosting fun Halloween events at all branches throughout the month of October, and it all leads to Halloween Fun Fest on Halloween day. October 31, 5:30 – 7 p.m. | La Vista Community Center
To provide the safest environment for trick-or-treating, La Vista is hosting this Halloween event complete with hayrack rides, trick-or-treating, access to the non-scary Spook Tent, and free hot dogs.
