There’s no denying that Omaha is an incredible place to live. Our beloved “Gateway to the West” is full of gorgeous green spaces, a thriving music scene, hundreds of fantastic restaurants, and plenty of cultural attractions. In fact, it’s so amazing, that we don’t blame you for wanting to live here!

When you do decide to move, it can be hard to decide where to settle down. That’s why we rounded up some of the hottest neighborhoods in the Omaha area right now, all featuring affordable housing, new urban developments and a wonderful community. No matter what you’re looking for in a home, we promise there’s a dream neighborhood for you on this list.

Prairie Lane

Quiet and full of greenery, Prairie Lane just happens to be one of the most popular neighborhoods in Omaha, but don’t take our word for it— just named this quaint little suburb as #2 on their list of the hottest neighborhoods in America!

Millennials make up about 43% of Prairie Lane’s residents, which isn’t surprising due to the stunning homes in the area that average around $160,000. But the neighborhood is also full of opulent dream homes that are perfect for families, retirees or just about anyone else looking for a forever home.

If you’re planning to go house hunting in the area soon (just like hundreds of other Americans) make sure to stop by Zorinsky Lake, which borders the area, for a fishing trip. And if you’re a bit of a shopaholic, you won’t want to miss the nearby Oak View Mall, which is full of some of our favorite shops and restaurants.

Omaha Neighborhoods

Millard, or Old Millard, is a very popular community located in the southwestern section of Omaha. A fantastic neighborhood for families, Millard is home to an award-winning school district that now educates over 23,000 students and has been ranked as one of the best in the state.

If you’re looking for a neighborhood with a small-town vibe, Millard could be perfect for you! The area boasts affordable homes among popular amenities, gorgeous parks and an adorable main street. While you’re visiting the area, don’t miss Boulder Creek Amusement Park, where you can play a round (or three) of miniature golf, or Shirley’s Diner, a retro diner serving up classic American fare.

Leavenworth is known for its moderately priced homes, picturesque parks, great schools, and proximity to shopping and nightlife—and it also boasts one of the highest walk scores in town!  It’s a popular area for people of all ages and walks of life, and though this information is not new by any means, the neighborhood is experiencing a renaissance of sorts. Certain areas within Leavenworth are being revitalized with new retail spots and restaurants, and since the neighborhood is located in the heart of Omaha, more businesses are starting to call it home.

In 2010, the area opened up Midtown Crossing, a small neighborhood in its own right, that features a diverse selection of shops, restaurants and community events. We have a full list of our favorite things to do and see in the area, so give it a click before you head over!

Nestled in the heart of Omaha near Memorial Park and Elmwood Park, this charming community features beautiful homes, tree-lined streets, a vibrant retail center and a top-notch school district. In fact, in 2011, the Dundee-Memorial Park neighborhood was named as one of the nation’s 10 best neighborhoods by the American Planning Association!

Residents of the neighborhood are very tight-knit, regularly hosting community events like the annual Fourth of July parade and the Dundee Days Festival. Walking through the neighborhood, you are more than likely to see a friendly face or two!

We have several guides on what exactly you should do in this lovely neighborhood, but if we had to choose some must-see attractions, they would have to be Dario’s Brasserie, Blue Line Coffee and Scout Dry Goods & Trade.

Little Bohemia

Little Bohemia (otherwise known as Bohemian Town) is a historic neighborhood in the Dahlman area that was founded by Czech immigrants in the 1880s. Though we’ve always considered it a wonderful place to call home, the neighborhood has been stealing the spotlight as of late with its recent revitalization.

Several historic buildings have been transformed into unique places of businesses. One example is the Omaha Creative Institute, which recently moved into a garage-style building that doesn’t look like much from the outside, but inside it has space for training and an art gallery. Or Vincent Outfitting, which recently converted a building from 1885 into a modern-day general store for men. But that’s not all—new coffee shops, breweries, stores and other local businesses are continuing to set up shop in this little oasis and we couldn’t be more excited!

Omaha Neighborhoods

For those of us who love the small-town vibe, getting to know your neighbors and becoming a “regular” at a local business—the tight-knit community of Elkhorn is the place to be. While it’s close to larger hubs in the area, it hasn’t lost that classic suburban feel.

Throughout this area, you’ll find well-maintained homes along tree-lined streets that will appeal to all ages and demographics. Elkhorn is the perfect place for those who don’t like to venture very far from home since you have everything you’ll ever need in one convenient, and incredible, location.

If you’re visiting the area for the first time, don’t miss The Mark, a local family favorite that features opportunities for volleyball bowling, arcade games, laser tag and more.

Benson is the perfect neighborhood for the creative folks who are in pursuit of lots to do in the neighborhood. Foodies, artists, musicians and music lovers all thrive in this historic neighborhood—and they don’t have to pay a ridiculous amount of money to be able to call Benson home.

This area offers affordable housing for first-time home buyers, with prices rarely topping $200,000. But this doesn’t mean you sacrifice culture and amenities, as the neighborhood has wonderful coffee shops (like Hardy Coffee), places to grab a drink (like 1912) and local restaurants (like Mantra Bar and Grille). This neighborhood has it all. Just ask any local Omahan and they’ll agree that Benson is a desirable, exciting and evolving part of town.

Gifford Park

The residents in Gifford Park are a happy bunch, most likely due to the tight-knit community and abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation! This lively neighborhood is one of the “greenest” neighborhoods around, boasting its namesake, Gilford Park, along with several community gardens, urban farming sites and bike racks around the area.

Gifford Park also offers an impressive lineup of things to do, from block parties to neighborhood markets to local projects that help bring residents together. And if you somehow run out of things to do within the neighborhood’s borders, Midtown Crossing and the Blackstone District are also within easy reach.

You can’t visit the area without stopping by Cali Taco, an Omaha staple that was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and serves one of the best fish tacos you’ll ever have the pleasure to indulge in. And don’t miss the new-ish coffee shop opened in 2018, Myrtle & Cypress, which is a fantastic place to gather over a delicious cup of Joe.
