Council Bluffs makes high marks in a state nationally recognized for excellence in education. The people of Council Bluffs realize the importance of education and are committed to maintaining outstanding schools, both public and private.
Student to teacher ratios are low in Council Bluffs schools, averaging 22.5:1 in
elementary schools and 17.2:1 in secondary schools. Educational performance, as
measured by student testing, is well above the national average. ACT test scores
average 20.4 (national average 18.6), and 52% of all students complete some
form of post secondary study.
Vocational and technical education are available locally through the public schools, courses at Iowa Western
Community College and dozens of private schools.
A whole array of higher education opportunities exist within a 20-minute drive of Council Bluffs, including two
community colleges, two colleges, three universities and two medical schools.

The Council Bluffs Community Schools staff of 1,075 is committed to making the youngest learners ready for a
successful school career; to equip young people for college, to prepare each student for the work environment

With 19 schools serving over 10,000 students, Council Bluffs Community Schools serve the Council Bluffs,

Lewis Central Community School District
The Lewis Central Community School District covers approximately 64 square miles surrounding Council Bluffs.
Lewis Central's enrollment is approximately 2,705 students, including 1,200 elementary, 700 middle school and
805 high school. The pupil to teacher ratio is 15:1 in elementary and 18:1 in middle and high schools.
The district has three elementary, one middle and one high school.
