20 of Our Favorite Omaha Restaurants & Bars That Opened in 2020

2020 was a difficult time for businesses—specifically for restaurants, bars, breweries and coffee shops that have had to close their doors to in-person dining and drinking for several months this year. It is even harder for those local businesses that have just recently opened, who are struggling to get the word out and maintain a steady flow of new customers.

And as much as we love our dining staples—the places we frequent again and again—there’s something extra special about discovering a brand new spot to get grub. That’s why we rounded up some of the hottest spots in Omaha that recently opened, from a brand new museum/coffee house to a haunted house-themed seafood restaurant. These delicious newcomers could eventually become some of the city’s most beloved eateries, topping our list of the best restaurants in the city. Read on to scope the best new Omaha restaurants that you should try to support this year!

Dripped & Draped is our new favorite Omaha destination for Instagram-worthy backdrops, stylish clothes and colorful lattes! Part boutique, part coffee shop, Dripped & Draped opened in March right before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. While it wasn’t an ideal grand opening, they’ve still garnered a cult following here in Omaha due to their gorgeous cafe, tasty drinks and incredibly friendly staff! Inside, you’ll find cozy digs with local art donning the walls along with a cute bar where you can order anything from cocktails and exciting coffee drinks to pastries and charcuterie. Every Sunday night, they host a socially distanced “Board Game BOGO Drink Night” where you get buy-one-drink-get-one-drink-free if you bring in a board game of your choice to play in the cafe. If you want to know about all the fun going on at Edge of the Universe—and information about their always-changing theme—make sure to sign up for their newsletter, which features information on specials, new drinks, events and more!

A seafood restaurant in a haunted house? You bet! Haunted House Shaking Seafood opened in October with a scary-good menu of classic Cajun seafood favorites. Enjoy seafood bags just the way you like them, with whatever seafood you enjoy. Dig into king crab, snow crab, Dungeness or blue crab, jumbo shrimp, mussels or lobster—all topped with their signature Cajun seasonings and paired with plenty of steamed corn and potatoes. But the tasty seafood isn’t the only thing that makes this restaurant stand out. They also have a pretty spooky interior boasting black walls, plenty of fake spiderwebs and even some friendly ghosts lining the walls. Visit them on Facebook for information on weekly specials, if you dare!

Using fresh, delicious ingredients, Javi’s crafts tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, rice bowls, tortas and so much more. They are open seven days a week from 7 a.m.-9 p.m. with online ordering and takeout options for those who would rather enjoy their meals at home! Enjoy vegan burgers topped with fresh greens, meat substitutes and sides like mac n’ “cheese”, bamboo seaweed salad, and tea rice.

The Switch

3618 Farnam Street, Omaha

We don’t think we’ve ever been as excited for something as much as The Switch, a brand new beer and food hall located in Blackstone. Currently, they offer six diverse food experiences from local chefs and food entrepreneurs including new locations of some of Omaha’s favorite restaurants and breweries, including Infusion Brewing, El Arepon, Stories Coffee, Ansel’s Pastrami & Bagels. Plus, brand new restaurant concepts like The Bubbly Tart (a fun, boutique bakery featuring made-from-scratch pastries and cakes) and Red Lantern (authentic Vietnamese street food restaurant with rotating specials).

Happy Dining!
