The Top 8 Garden Centers in the Lincoln, Nebraska Area

Through decades of history, eastern Nebraska area communities have been built around agriculture. As a result, our neighborhoods are home to thriving family farms, farmers markets, several food and agriculture-based organizations, and dozens of community gardens.

So if you’re interested in getting in on the Lincoln agriculture scene—or just want to spruce up your home’s curb appeal—now’s the time! You can start by paying a visit to some local gardening experts. We rounded up some of the best in the area, some of which have been growing in the Lincoln area since the early 1900sHappy planting!

Campbell’s Nurseries & Garden Center has been serving the area since 1912, offering plants grown on their family farm just outside of Lincoln. They currently have two locations throughout Lincoln, both offering a wide range of plants and gardening supplies as well as landscape design and maintenance. During the pandemic, they are requiring individuals older than 5 to wear masks when inside the store or when near others outside. If you’d rather stay home to shop, they also have online, phone and email shopping services. 

Root + Hive was born out of a passion for growing, pleasure in hard work, and a love of the outdoors. For 30 years, they have been a staple nursery business; first as Little’s Nurserythen B & B Nursery, and now, Root + Hive. Their primary mission is to provide growers of all skill levels an educational and cooperative community. However, this mission is not exclusive to growers. They also welcome artists, photographers, and educators — anyone with a passion for nature, sustainability and learning. 

Founded in 1919 in Shenandoah, Iowa, Earl May Seed and Nursery was once just a tiny mail-order business. Today, they have over 30 locations in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri, but they haven’t lost their “small-town” vibe. Each of their garden centers is staffed by local, experienced professionals who are experts on all aspects of lawns and gardens. Plus, they only sell plants that are Midwest hardy and appropriately rated for our climate so you can make sure that your garden looks good long-term!

 

For seasonal bedding plants, container gardens and hardy landscape plants, head to Urban Trail Gardens! Here, you’ll find highquality, locally grown annuals and perennials, an amazing variety of succulents, premium hanging baskets as well as a great selection of ornamental shrubs and trees to help enhance your landscape. Their 2021 season just started and will run through October, so be sure to take advantage of their amazing stock while you can! 

 

For all your organic and hydroponic gardening, don’t miss Bodhi Organic Garden Supply! This adorable shop has everything you’ll need to get started with your garden or spruce it up for the coming season. If you need help, don’t hesitate to chat with their knowledgeable staff, who can guide you from seedlings to harvest. They also host a variety of pop-ups and classes for anyone and everyone interested in plants and learning how to grow them. Heritage Nursery’s owner, Bill Spittler, started his popular nursery in Bellevue in 1988 before moving to Elkhorn and eventually opening up a second location here in Lincoln and then a third in Roca, where their plants are grown and cultivated. Today, they offer a wide range of locally grown plants at all their locations across the region. They work mostly with landscapers and business owners directly, but homeowners can also purchase wholesale plants, grass and landscaping materials from any of their locations.

Midwest Natives Nursery is a production greenhouse that specializes in the cultivation of Great Plains-native perennial wildflowers and grasses. Their main goal is to sustainably and responsibly produce the highest quality native plants in the region in order to create the most natural and healthy environment for their customers.
