Memorial Day is an important time of year. It’s a day where, as a country, we take a moment to reflect and honor those who have died while serving in our armed forces. It’s also a celebration of freedom and therefore the holiday weekend traditionally includes family-friendly events,\u00a0barbecues and \u2014 <\/span>as an unofficial first day of summer \u2014 <\/span>plenty of opportunities to get outside.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

In true Midwest fashion, Omaha, the Metro Area and Council Bluffs will be celebrating the long weekend with patriotism, local flare and plenty of baseball. <\/span><\/p>\n

Gather your families and friends, throw a festive barbecue of your own and\/or join the fun at any of these local events, festivals and celebrations. From concert series that continue through the season to one-time blowout festivals, there\u2019s a little something for everyone in this official guide to Memorial Day weekend in 2017! <\/span><\/p>\n

Welcome the summer in La Vista as the season settles into the midwest. Similar to years past, there will be a carnival, vendor booths, Hot Wheels races, a beer garden, live music and fireworks displays! <\/span><\/p>\n

Loessfest is an annual celebration of the all of the great things happening in Council Bluffs: the culture, the music, the art, the people, you name it! Since 2013, the festival has been kicking off the summer season with a wide array of free events. In the first two years, Loessfest has drawn more than 66,000 people from all over the region to the Council Bluffs riverfront.<\/span><\/p>\n

If recreation is your game, register for the <\/span>Run Loess Half Marathon and 5K<\/span><\/a> on Saturday, starting and ending at the beautiful Tom Hanafan River\u2019s Edge Park. Then hop on your bike for <\/span>Bike the Bluffs<\/span><\/a> on Sunday! <\/span><\/p>\n

No matter which day you go, you\u2019ll hear plenty of local, live music. <\/span>KC and the Sunshine Band<\/span><\/a> opens the festival on Friday; <\/span>Country Rocks the River<\/span><\/a> is a classic country dancing party on Saturday;\u00a0<\/span>Omaha Symphony<\/span><\/a> will play on Sunday and a movie in the park will wrap up the event on Monday!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Omaha Zoo will be hosting fun-filled activities all weekend and through Memorial Day on Monday! There will be wild entertainment including bounce houses, airbrush tattoos and unique animal presentations for all ages. The zoo is already the best place to kick off the summer so why not celebrate with free extras? All activities are included in admission. <\/span><\/p>\n

At Climate CrossFit, they believe the best way to honor America\u2019s heroes is to test your physical and mental limits. Participate in their celebratory challenge as a team or an individual and you may win a prize! But even if you don\u2019t you\u2019ll get to enjoy the potluck barbecue. All proceeds from entry fees will go to the <\/span>Great Plains Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Memorial Day Massive Block Party is closing down the streets of Benson on Saturday night for a lively outdoor show. Just outside the doors of The Waiting Room, you\u2019ll find\u00a0food vendors, a full bar and non-alcoholic beverages along with a full evening of electronic music. After the show, keep celebrating at the after party inside the venue! <\/span>Get your General Admission and VIP tickets online<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Kids Jamboree at NEX<\/span><\/a> | Gretna<\/span><\/h2>\n

Kids Jamboree is a kids\u2019 festival series hosted by Nebraska Crossing Outlets. Helicopter Day at SAC Museum<\/span><\/a> | Ashland<\/span><\/h2>\n

Celebrate patriotism and the Omaha community with SAC Museum on Saturday! Helicopters begin landing promptly at 10 a.m. and visitors can watch while these choppers fly over the horizon and land right in front of them. Law enforcement pilots, commercial and private helicopter pilots will share information about careers in aviation and give close-up views of the machines \u2014\u00a0and maybe even a ride or two! Inside the Museum, there will be even more fun \u2014\u00a0including a drone workshop, family friendly activities and make-and-take crafts.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Memorial Day, stop by Cedardale Cemetary<\/a> at 10 a.m. for a ceremony hosted by\u00a0American Legion Post 32. Following the event,\u00a0refreshments will be served at the Legion Hall. You can also attend a similar evening service at 6 p.m. in Veteran\u2019s Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Memorial Day Service<\/a> | Gretna<\/h2>\n

When<\/strong>: Monday, May 29<\/p>\n

Where<\/strong>: Peterson Park<\/a><\/p>\n

Gretna American Legion Post 216 will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. in Peterson Park<\/a>. The Avenue of Flags, with more than 200 flags representing deceased veterans from the community will be on display and the ceremony will include a\u00a0reading of the names on each flag. Afterward, lunch for veterans and immediate family members will be served at the post, 11690 S. 216th St<\/a>. a short drive from the park.<\/p>\n
