Christopher Houston began <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tackarch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TACKarchitects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the summer of 2011, they did so with a mission to create a service-based studio space \u2014\u00a0not just your run-of-the-mill architecture firm. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an interview with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npdodge.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dodge Voice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Jeff explained, \u201cWe had worked together over ten years at another firm and we felt we were starting to lose sight of what our passion was: servicing clients and creating the best design we possibly could. We wanted a more studio-style environment \u2014 kind of like what you would have in school. And we felt that attitude could yield better design quality and really inspire people. So we left and we started TACK.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Year after year, that move and that mission have driven their motivation and it\u2019s even where the name TACK was born. Defined as \u201cto change course by turning a boat&#8217;s head into and through the wind,\u201d the word tack is all about adaptation and progressing through and moving with obstacles. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDepending on which way the wind blows, you\u2019re adjusting your sails; that was really a metaphor for what the three of us were going through in our careers at the time,\u201d Jeff said. \u201cAnd it was available on GoDaddy. It was a win-win.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a profile from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/omahavideosolutions.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omaha Video Solutions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Rebecca said, \u201cWe wanted to have a word that had meaning. TACK needed a project. And before they left their old firm, a blessing came disguised as a private residence. You could call it a blessing or you could simply call it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tackarch.com\/portfolio\/arthouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Art[House]<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt was about a 15,000 square foot house in the middle of Regency here in Omaha,\u201d Jeff explained. \u201cIt was for an art collector and he wanted a museum he could live in. In the end, it yielded higher quality and a more cohesive design solution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working in part with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/LarsenDesignsInc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omaha interior designer, Angela Larsen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, TACK created a breath-taking (and award-winning) home inside and out. And, in just six short months, it led to their first commercial project with Omaha-based <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tenaska.com\/abouttenaska\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenaska<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThat ended up being our biggest commission at the time; we did all the interiors, the TI for Tenaska as well as the design of the building. And that was how we got our start.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the firm has over 20 projects under their belt\u00a0from additions and renovations to new construction and even two custom homes \u2014\u00a0including a new headquarters for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/togetheromaha.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Together, Inc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12163 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/npdodge.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/TACK-Together-1.png\" alt=\"TACKarchitects Omaha Architecture\" width=\"945\" height=\"630\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 945px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 945\/630;\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Photo courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/tackarch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TACKarchitects<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTogether is about homeless prevention. They\u2019re great clients and we used their mission as an inspiration for the design,\u201d Jeff said. When you step inside the Omaha nonprofit, among other stand-out design details, you\u2019ll find a wall of doors. \u201cUsing a door as a metaphor for opportunity, the concept of this design was to stitch together underutilized materials. This demonstrates how the client pieces together resources to make a positive impact on the homeless community,\u201d explains the TACK website. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeff said, \u201cThat\u2019s what we try to bring to every one of our projects. Whether it\u2019s a house, it\u2019s retail, it\u2019s commercial or a corporate facility, the thread through all of our work is to get inspired by the client. How can we customize the space for them?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most recently, this took the team on an emotional endeavor with the Jackson Dinsdale Art Center on the Hastings College campus. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe data-src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/204382614\" width=\"100%\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Jeff said, \u201cWe were working with the school to elevate their art program with all new facilities. It was fun; they\u2019re a great client in a great town with a great program. We were working with the donor as well whose son had passed away at the beginning of the project. He was a student at Hastings so there was an emotional connection that resonated with us as a team. We\u2019re really proud of that project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, Jeff concedes, it\u2019s difficult to choose a favorite. \u201cThey\u2019re all my favorites; they\u2019re all like your children. You birth these things and then you send them off into the wild.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe data-src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/204295202\" width=\"100%\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Functioning as a design studio with motivation coming from clients as well as the whole team of artists, TACK builds and grows from every undertaking. Inspiration is developed from one project to the next so that no one building can be said to be independent of the others. \u201cThey are more like chapters in one novel,\u201d Jeff has explained.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And because of that, there\u2019s not a heavy dependence on trends. \u201cA long time ago, when I first graduated from school, I had a stack of magazines,\u201d Jeff said. \u201cI used to know exactly which projects were in each magazine and I had them all tabbed and categorized. About ten years ago I stopped doing that because it got overwhelming. I don\u2019t even really look at magazines anymore, to tell you the truth. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TACKarchitects\/?fref=ts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tackarchitects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are great ways to see inspirational work done by our peers but at the end of the day we try to come at each project with a unique perspective.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That perspective develops inside TACK as each team member gets ahold of it. \u201cIt\u2019s a design studio so everybody gets a say in the process. We\u2019re extremely collaborative and everybody is always walking around looking at what everybody else is working on,\u201d Jeff said. \u201cWe all make each other better. At the end of the day, it\u2019s about servicing that client; they\u2019re the ones writing the check. We\u2019re working from them.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the personal experience TACK brings to the table, private residence projects become the most intimate and hardest to facilitate. Jeff explained, \u201cYou get into their kitchen literally and figuratively a little bit more. You ask tough questions like \u2018What time do you go to bed? What time do you wake up in the morning? How do you shower or bathe? We\u2019ve had clients say \u2018Can you design me something and I\u2019ll find a site?\u2019 But that doesn\u2019t work; you have to find the site first and that informs the way the house is designed. You\u2019re designing for that place; genius loci is the term. That\u2019s really our attitude when it comes to residential. \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And across the board \u2014 from private to commercial \u2014\u00a0the site is going to affect the design, the building and ultimately the atmosphere inside any new construction or renovation. Jeff said, \u201cEach space, depending on how you want it to function is affected by the natural light. That really drives the whole enchilada. If you like to get up early in the morning, maybe you want your bedroom on the east so the sun helps wake you or if you get up at noon you\u2019ll look at putting your bedroom in a different space.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step in any design, for the designer and the client, is to consider the site: to consider the light, the surroundings, the views, you name it. And from there, with inspiration from all sides, TACK creates a home, a headquarters and a piece of art. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding their future and their progress, Jeff said, \u201cWe\u2019re building a brand and a portfolio. We don\u2019t take every project. It\u2019s not because we\u2019re pretentious, we just want to give maximum effort on each project we work on. We\u2019re growing; we\u2019re trying to grow, but we\u2019re not trying to explode.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re blessed to be in a community right now where everyone is busy. Things are rocking and rolling, but you definitely don\u2019t want to take every project.
