There is something special about making a home feel like home, especially around the holidays. In fact, we\u2019re big on decorating for holidays, including\u00a0Thanksgiving<\/a>\u00a0and more Thanksgiving<\/a>… This time we\u2019re discussing a serious fireplace mantel necessity: stockings!<\/p>\n

They come in all different sizes, colors and patterns, and you can even buy a variety of custom socks on Etsy<\/a>. There are so many different styles and options, it can be hard to decide on the perfect look for your own home. If you have something very specific in mind for your holiday decor, you may want to consider making your own! And believe us, they are much easier than you might think.<\/p>\n

The best part about this \u201cmixed print\u201d stocking design is that you can get away with using scrap material that you already have lying around the house. Or, you get the opportunity to visit the store and explore a variety of new fabric choices! Keep in mind, this project is just an outline of what we created. You don\u2019t need to follow the steps like a recipe. Instead, we encourage you to take a look at what we put together and add your own creativity and personal touch! \"DIY<\/p>\n

What You Need for TWO<\/span> Stockings:<\/h2>\n

FABRIC + SUPPLIES \/\/<\/strong>
\nLiner fabric – 1 yard (I used a thicker, plush fabric to give the stockings some weight)
\nBase fabric – 1 yard (\u00bd yard of each color \/ print)
\nToe fabric – \u00bd yard (\u00bc yard of each color \/ print)
\nTop of sock fabric – \u00bd yard (\u00bc yard of each color \/ print)
\nAccessories: fur, ribbon, decorative cord, etc. (whatever you can dream up!)
\nSewing machine
\nNeedle, thread & some embroidery thread
\nFabric scissors
\nHot glue gun & glue sticks<\/p>\n

PATTERN \/\/<\/strong>
\nUse wax paper to make your pattern. The dimensions I used are: 10 inches wide at the top of the sock, 21 inches long for the base of the sock (22 1\/2 if you measure from the tip of the toe to the top of the sock), and 14 inches from the heel to the toe.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

P.S. How great do these look on our DIY Open Shelving Unit<\/a>?! If you have a small space, and one that lacks a fireplace mantel, this is the next best thing.<\/p>\n

\"DIY\"DIY<\/p>\n

First you’ll want to make your pattern with the wax paper. Cut out the shape and size that you want your stocking to be and plan out the design on a piece of scrape paper. This will help visualize the project, what fabric you’ll use, and what it will look like in the end. The dimensions used for these stockings, again, were: 10 inches wide at the top of the sock, 21 inches long for the base of the sock (22 1\/2 if you measure from the tip of the toe to the top of the sock), and 14 inches from the heel to the toe. However, these are somewhat big stockings (which we really like!), but again, use this as a guide and make the pattern to fit your own style! Below you’ll see the process of how we created the pattern and began to visualize the design as we cut out pieces of fabric and laid them on each other.<\/p>\n

\"DIY<\/p>\n

Cut the fabric to the size of the pattern, but leave an extra two inches at the top of the sock with the “top of sock” fabric. The fabric you choose for the top of the sock should be able to hang over in order to complete the last step. After you’ve planned out your design and cut all the fabric, you’ll want to begin pinning the pieces of fabric together for the sewing machine. For the outside fabric, it’s important to remember to pin right sides together! If you don’t, you’ll end up taking your work apart after you’ve sewn it together, which is never fun. Use the sewing machine to sew the toe fabric on to the base fabric (ehem, right sides together!) and then trim the edges off.<\/p>\n

Then, sew the top of the sock on the base fabric in the same way. Once you have the different prints sewn on the front (and back if you’re creating a design there, too) it’s time to fit the front and back pieces together. Make sure you’ve trimmed the fabric down so you have a smooth edge for sewing. Place the front and back of the stockings with the inside out (or, right sides together! – you can never emphasis this enough…). Sew the pieces together with a sewing machine, leaving the top of the sock open. Now you can flip it inside out at the end and you won’t be able to see the edges where you’ve sewn.<\/p>\n

Next, you’ll need to sew the liner fabric. The fabric we used is the same on both sides, so thankfully the right sides together part didn’t need to stress us out. For the liner, find a nice thick material – something that will give the stockings some weight. However, due to the thickness, you’ll want to sew the liner slightly smaller than the outer layer. Otherwise, you’ll have a hard time getting it inside the sock! We went 1\/4 inch smaller on each side, but this will depend on how thick your fabric is.<\/p>\n

\"DIY<\/p>\n

Once the liner is sewn together, you don’t need to flip it inside out since you actually want the sewn edge on the inside of the two layers. Place the liner inside the base fabric sock and work out the edges until it fits in there smoothly. Next you’ll want to hand sew the top fabric over the liner so you create a nice edge. This will take a little time, but it’s worth it in the end to have a finished piece!<\/p>\n

\"DIY<\/p>\n

Now, the only thing left is the accessories! Add ribbon, fur, decorative cord, bows, etc. to make it align with your own style. We used a hot glue gun to attach the extra pieces to the outside, which worked great.<\/p>\n
