Pride Month is upon us! This month, which was created to honor the historic\u00a0Stonewall\u00a0Riots of 1969, is dedicated to celebrating and supporting the LGBTQIA+ community.\u00a0But regardless of whether you identify asLGBTQIA+ or\u00a0consider yourself\u00a0an ally, Pride Month is a time when everyone can celebrate love.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

We’ve rounded up a few ways you can celebrate Pride in the Omaha area this month, from festivals to drag brunches,\u00a0along with a few ways you can take a moment to support Omaha’s queer community. Happy Pride!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Chalk the Walk at Edge of the Universe<\/a><\/h3>\n

Make Omaha sidewalks brighter and more colorful with a chalk walk outside Edge of the Universe on June 4th at 6 p.m. Draw messages supporting Pride Month, rainbows and maybe even a few unicorns and llamas too! Chalk will be provided.<\/p>\n

Go to a\u00a0<\/span>Drag Brunch<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

Kick-off Pride Month with a Drag Brunch at\u00a0<\/span>Blackstone Social<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on June 6<\/span>th<\/span>! This party of all parties will feature several incredible, local\u00a0queer\u00a0and drag performers,\u00a0including Lady Etta Mommy, Dren Kennedy, Matthew Steele, Amelia Park-Shakers and more. There will also be great food and drinks and live music from\u00a0<\/span>DJ\u00a0Silkee<\/span><\/a>. General admission tickets cost $40 and include unlimited well drinks and mimosas! This block party on West Broadway in\u00a0<\/span>Council Bluffs<\/span><\/a>\u00a0will be held on June 12<\/span>th<\/span>, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. and will include a variety of family-friendly activities, adult drinks, brunch and entertainment by the\u00a0cast of Caddy’s Kitchen and Cocktails Drag Yourself to Brunch!\u00a0<\/span>Click here<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for all the information.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Get social this Pride Month at Blackstone Social!\u00a0<\/span>Queer Bar Takeover<\/span><\/a>\u00a0takes over a new bar every month and Pride Month is no different. This special event will be held on June 18<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0from 6-9 p.m. and give you the chance to meet and mingle with members of Omaha’s LGBTQIA+ community. There will also be prizes, drink specials, live music and much more. Follow\u00a0<\/span>Queer Bar Takeover on Facebook<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for more information on this month’s event as well as others coming up this year!<\/span><\/p>\n

Go to the first-ever\u00a0<\/span>Star City Pride Parade<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

For the first time ever, Star City Pride, Lincoln’s local LGBTQIA+ non-profit organization, will be hosting a\u00a0Pride parade! What is now planned as an annual event, this parade and festival will run from June 18<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0through the 19<\/span>th<\/span>. For as little as $100, you can participate with an entry float, walk, car or group organization\u2014dressed up and showing the Nebraska capitol what Pride means to you! The festival itself will feature lots of food, drinks, live music, shows and so much more. Omaha\u2019s Heartland Pride Festival is one of the largest LGBTQIA+ festivals in the region!\u00a0Unfortunately,\u00a0you’ll have to wait just a bit longer to attend since this year’s event will be held in July. But you can still use this time to plan your colorful outfit,\u00a0and\u00a0RSVP to local events like\u00a0<\/span>Youth Pride at Baxter Arena<\/span><\/a>, the massive parade in\u00a0<\/span>Old Market<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0and then the\u00a0massive\u00a0festival\u00a0complete\u00a0with live music.\u00a0<\/span>Click here<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for all the information and to add it to your Google calendar!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ride for Pride<\/a><\/h3>\n

Grab your bike and head to Trek Bicycle on June 27th for a ride to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community! The ride will end at Seymour Smith Park and participants will each receive free refreshments and a free Trek T-shirt.\u00a0Click here<\/a>\u00a0for all the information.<\/p>\n

Watch\u00a0<\/span>Miss & Mr. Heartland Pride Step Down<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

Before a new Miss & Mr. Heartland Pride can be crowned at\u00a0the\u00a0Heartland Pride\u00a0Pageant\u00a0in August, the current king and queen\u00a0have to\u00a0step down! Attend the ceremony at\u00a0<\/span>The Max<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on June 27<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0and enjoy some great dancing and drinks while you’re at it. This month,\u00a0consider making a donation\u00a0to one of the many local LGBTQIA+ organizations that work toward making a difference in the lives of gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer\/questioning teens and adults. From preventing homelessness and advocating for legislative change, to pioneering HIV\/AIDS research (and more), these organizations are tirelessly working to make the world a truly equal space for everyone.\u00a0<\/span>Heartland Pride<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>OutNebraska<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>PFLAG Omaha<\/span><\/a>, the\u00a0<\/span>River City Gender Alliance<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Star City Pride<\/span><\/a>\u00a0are great places to start.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

While making a point to support LGBTQIA-owned businesses is important all year long, we like to show them a little extra love during Pride Month. Plus,\u00a0now that we’re coming out of the pandemic,\u00a0many local businesses are struggling to find their footing after months of closed doors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

If you want to support some Omaha-area LGBTQIA-owned\u00a0businesses\u00a0this month (and always) head to\u00a0Heartland Pride’s\u00a0<\/span>LGBT Community & Business Directory of Omaha and Council Bluffs<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0There, they have a business directory search so you can find exactly what you\u2019re looking for, from queer-owned barbershops and bars to photographers and catering businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Educate yourself on LGBTQIA+ issues<\/span><\/h3>\n

While a big part of Pride Month is dedicated to celebration, another huge part of\u00a0Pride is community outreach and education. That means educating yourself on past and current LGBTQIA+ issues in our community.\u00a0Reading is a great\u00a0start\u00a0and we recommend picking up a few titles from\u00a0<\/span>The Bookworm’s LGBTQIA+ section<\/span><\/a>. If you have Netflix, we also recommend putting on a few documentaries about LGBTQIA+ experiences like\u00a0<\/span>A Secret Love<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0FX also has a great new documentary covering six true LGBTQIA+stories called\u00a0<\/span>PRIDE,\u00a0out now on Hulu<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Visit Stonewall from home<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

Before the parades, there was Stonewall. It\u2019s the reason we have Pride Month today, and one way you can support the movement at home this month is by educating yourself on the history of Pride. While you can\u2019t visit the Stonewall National Monument this year, you can visit virtually via\u00a0<\/span>Stonewall Forever<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This\u00a0interactive online exhibit takes visitors through the history of the monument, including what life was like before\u00a0Stonewall, the riots, and the first year of Pride. The powerful webpage is full of photos along with soundbites of protests and iconic media interviews. After you\u2019ve finished exploring and learning, you\u2019ll have the chance to add your own memory to the exhibit.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
