Located in a unique, unglaciated area of the High Plains, Agate Fossil Beds National Monument contains important information about the life of the mammals in the Miocene Epoch.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">The park was o<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">nce home to prehistoric creatures like the\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">D<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">i<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">nohyus<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Stenomylus<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Menoceras<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u2014<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">these animal hoofprints and layers of fossilized bones can be found throughout Agate. While the area has long since been excavated, park visitors can still explore the area&#8217;s rolling hills, rock formations, museums and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/home\/learn\/historyculture\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"1\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Homestead National Historic Park<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0| Beatrice<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"en-US\">The Homestead Act of 1862 was one of the most significant and enduring events\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">since\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the westward expansion of the United States. The act\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">g<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">ranted 160 acres of free land to claimants, giving any person (including immigrants, women and those formerly enslaved) a &#8220;fair chance<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">.<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">&#8221; It made the dream of westward expansion a reality for millions of men and women\u2014and Homestead National Historic Park in Beatrice commemorates the effects this act had on the landscape and people of the western United States. The Missouri National Recreational River is a 100-mile stretch of the river\u2014along with 20 miles of the lower Niobrara River and\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">8<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0miles of\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Verdigre<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0Creek\u2014offering recreational activities like boating, fishing and bird watching. Because of its size and different types of scenery, you could spend days exploring the area. If you only have a couple of hours, don&#8217;t miss the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwo.usace.army.mil\/mrrp\/site-Audubon-Bend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"4\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Audubon Bend Wildlife Area<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/outdoornebraska.gov\/ponca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"5\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Ponca State Park<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-US\">. Float the Niobrara River on a canoe, tube or kayak. From the top<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">you can catch site of Nebraska&#8217;s gorgeous\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">prairie<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0land as well as parts of the historic Oregon Trail.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2><span lang=\"en-US\">State Parks<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/outdoornebraska.gov\/chadron\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"9\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Chadron State Park<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0| Chadron<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Nebraska\u2019s first state park, Chadron State Park, was founded in 1921 and is nestled among the distinctive buttes and canyons of Nebraska\u2019s Pine Ridge. Since its founding almost a century ago, this park remains a popular spot for camping, hiking, fishing and more. Mahoney State Park is a popular outdoorsy retreat for residents of both cities.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Perfect for visits\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">year-round<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, this state park is home to an aquatic center and indoor playground, hiking and biking trails, a treetop ropes course, an observation tower, indoor\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">rock<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">&#8211;<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">climbing<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0wall, sledding, ice skating and the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/outdoornebraska.gov\/mahoney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"11\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Peter\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Kiewit<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0Lodge<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-US\">.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">The park<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0also offers\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">an<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0arts and crafts center, an array of cabins<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">,<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0as well as ample camping op<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">portunities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/outdoornebraska.gov\/fortrobinson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"12\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Fort Robinson State Park<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0| Crawford<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Established in 1820 on recommendation\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">by\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Fort Atkinson was the first U.S. military post west of the Missouri River. Today, much of the historic outpost has been reconstructed and is open for visitors looking to get a little taste of American history. Bring the whole family to enjoy one of the living history demonstrations, which take place throughout the summer and fall and typically includes actors playing fur traders, coopers, blacksmiths, carpenters, and more.
