One of Omaha’s popular recreational and residential areas is known as the Old Market.  Located on the eastern edge of downtown, the area gets it name from its original development as a wholesale and retail grocery center.  Today, many of these buildings remain and their first floors are the sites of art galleries, restaurants, boutiques and specialty stores, while many of the upper floors have been renovated into upscale apartments and condominiums. The area retains its charm with original brick streets, covered sidewalk cafes, and horse drawn carriages.  Weather permitting you’ll find street musicians and artists.  During spring, summer, and fall there is a large Farmers’ Market selling everything from in-season, garden produce to freshly baked ethnic breads, rolls and pastries.  Restaurants of all types abound, as do bars and venues featuring live music and dancing. In certain areas abutting the Old Market you’ll find newer condos and apartments which offer more residential features but are within walking distance of the entertainment found in the Market itself.
