Area Information
Elmwood ParkIn 1889, noted landscape architect H. W. S. Cleveland recommended that the city of Omaha develop a park on its western edge to “shut out city sights and sounds in order to refresh the senses." City fathers agreed with this need and were successful in obtaining a donation of 55 acres at 802 South 60 th Street which they named Elmwood Park. Today the park sits in the middle of the city and covers 208 acres. Amenities include an 18 hole golf course, a popular community swimming pool, two baseball fields, miles of hiking and biking trails, an enclosed pavilion, as well as picnic areas and wooded, natural terrain. In 1937, the University of Omaha was moved to a site abutting Elwood Park on the north and west and was housed in one large building. Currently close to 21,000 students attend classes, participate in activities, and live in numerous new and newly remodeled buildings on this beautiful, urban campus, now known as the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Most homes in the family friendly Elmwood Park neighborhood were built in the 1950’s and vary in style and price point. This residential area lies west of the park and the campus and is served by Omaha Public and several private schools. With the park’s amenities plus a vibrant retail corridor along 72 nd Street, this midtown community is a popular home site for many Omahans.
