Area Information
Plattsmouth“Honor the Past, Plan for the Future” is the motto for the city of Plattsmouth, the county seat of Cass County, Nebraska. By preserving its Main Street Historic District and implementing its One and Six Year Plans for the Future, it has taken these words seriously. Today its sixty-five hundred citizens and many visitors enjoy the area’s heritage through not only restored homes, antique and eclectic shops and all types of restaurants, but with events such as the 80-year-old “Harvest Festival”; “Rollin’ on the River”—a huge firework display every 4 th of July; “Cruzin’ Main”- a car show in October; and “Hometown Holidays” - with carriage rides and carolers in November. Lewis and Clark visited an area north of the Platte River in 1804, but it wasn’t until 1854 that a trading post named “the Barracks” was constructed as a permanent site for docking ferry boats transporting settlers across the Missouri River from Mills County, Iowa. As a community developed, the name was changed to Plattsmouth to reflect the convergence of the Platte River with the Missouri River. Fertile farmland and easy access to both rivers played important roles in the city’s development and continue to do so today. With easy access to Bellevue and Omaha, many people commute to work sites in these communities. This is especially true of military personnel stationed at Offutt in Bellevue. The city government and its Chamber of Commerce are also actively engaged in economic development for the area and have been the recipients of several large grants used for a new senior facility, the Plattsmouth Community Center, and an industrial park. Education is well-served with two parochial schools, an Early Childhood Center, an Elementary School, Middle School, and High School. All buildings are relatively new and have excellent technological facilities for both staff and students. Plattsmouth also has a 40,000 volume library, fifteen churches, and six public parks. Each park fulfills a specific need—there’s one with ball fields and tennis courts, one with swimming facilities, etc. A growing community with small town friendliness and amenities, Plattsmouth is a great place to look for a home in the Omaha area.
