Standing Bear recreation area is a 685 acre multi-use park, lake, and wildlife sanctuary located between 132nd and 144th Streets, Fort Street and Military Road in northwest Omaha. Opened in 1977 as a dam for flood control on the Papio Creek system, it quickly became a popular site for fishing, boating, walking, biking, ice skating, and enjoying outdoor activities all year round. Today, it is also a popular spot for picnicking and bird watching and is home to a remote control airplane flying field.
With Omaha’s population moving northwest during the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, developers saw the need for affordable homes which would attract first time home buyers. Banking on the popularity of the Standing Bear site, they laid out housing developments surrounding the park, which continue to grow in size and number today.
These homes continue to attract families, singles, and empty nesters mainly because of their moderate price points but also for their more modern styles and amenities—hardwood floors, open concept floor plans, and double garages. Location is also a factor as there are numerous other recreation opportunities near Standing Bear Lake--soccer and softball fields, public and private golf courses, restaurants and movie theaters.
Other features which attract homebuyers are newer Omaha Public School facilities, easy access to I-680 for shorter employment commutes, numerous churches--some with affiliated schools, and convenient shopping—especially grocery and “big box” stores. There are also Neighborhood Associations in most developments which promote social activities, safety, and covenant enforcement in their community.
While life styles are active, several homeowners in the area commented that their neighbors are friendly and that when needed, the park itself is a refuge from all the hustle and bustle of life in a big city!
