Activities to Help You Survive Winter in Omaha

The weatherman told us to expect 2-4 inches of snow in the Omaha area this Monday, November 30. So we anxiously awaited its arrival, got our measuring sticks ready, but were very disappointed to find out the light snowfall did not exceed one inch. Why were we so concerned about the depth of the snow? Because we thought we might be able to reward a lucky guesser for predicting the correct date for our snowfall contest!

Our winner will receive the ultimate Winter Staycation package, valued at $400! They will have the opportunity to stay at the Magnolia Hotel, cruise around The Ice at the UNMC Rink, eat a delectable dinner at V. Mertz in Old Market and travel in style with a sleigh ride from Magical Journey Carriage Services.

While it might not have snowed enough and the winner is still a mystery, we certainly encourage you to steal those ideas for your own winter activity list in the meantime. We have in fact conveniently outlined the ultimate magical getaway in the charming city of Omaha. However, if none of those activities peak your interest, we have a few other wintery options for you to consider!

The Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium

We talk about the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium quite a bit — but for good reason. Many residents don’t realize that winter is one of the best times to visit this world-renowned zoo. That fact is clear as day when you’re weaving through crowds and trying to catch a glimpse into a popular exhibit in the heat of the summer. So consider bundling up and enjoying the light foot traffic at the zoo during the colder months. Take refuge from the elements in one of several indoor exhibits, including the Desert Dome, the jungle, the aquarium and the butterfly pavilion. (Just keep in mind that the butterfly exhibit might have less butterflies floating around this time of year!) Or relax in front of an awe-inspiring movie in the Lozier IMAX Theater. Check out their showtimes and be prepared to learn interesting information about animals on this larger-than-life screen.

Joslyn Art Museum

Another way to learn something in a creative and fun way is through a visit to Joslyn Art Museum. Perusing a beautiful building filled with breathtaking, historic pieces of art is one of the best ways we can think of to spend a winter day. Even if you have been before or typically avoid “touristy” things happening in your own city, consider a revisit or first-time visit to Joslyn Art Museum. Plus, did you know that admission to this incredible museum is absolutely FREE? Do we have your attention yet? Maybe a preview of what’s inside might catch your eye.

Mt. Crescent Ski Area

Continue the snowy adventures with a ski trip at Mt. Crescent just thirty minutes from Omaha in Honey Creek, Iowa. Due to Mt. Crescent’s advanced snowmaking system, there is always snow on their terrain from December to March. Their powdery ski runs reach up to 2,400 feet in length, which is seven football fields long! If you are a beginner mountaineer, you may rest assured that over 100,000 people have learned to ski or snowboard at Mt. Crescent. And if you are a seasoned pro on the subject of all things snow, you will certainly be challenged during your ski runs. Whatever your experience level, you’ll enjoy unwinding from the day’s activities at Mt. Crescent’s Swiss-style lodge complete with a year-round sundeck and a cozy cafe. Grab some hearty, wintery food and drinks, and warm up by their outside fire pit while roasting marshmallows. What are you waiting for? Check out Mt. Crescent’s winter hours, keeping in mind that they are subject to change depending on the weather.

After all is said and done, you’ll want to reward your festive efforts during the season with something sweet from Hollywood Candy. Let’s face it — there is no such thing as conscious eating during the holidays, and this nostalgic candy shop is here to fulfill your sweet tooth cravings. Hollywood Candy hosts an impressive PEZ collection, a huge selection of retro toys, nostalgic candies and homemade treats made fresh daily. It is at this eclectic shop in Old Market that you’ll discover the classic candy bars and memorabilia from your childhood just as you remember them. Might we also suggest doing some holiday shopping while you’re here for the collector or nostalgic individual in your family or friend group? You can’t find these unique items at any old store in the area!

An Omaha Coffee Shop

If your taste buds flared up while reading about Hollywood Candy, you might consider a visit to one of our favorite coffee shops this winter. We particularly love Aromas, Beansmith Coffee Roasters, Culprit Cafe & Bakery, and Omaha Bicycle Co. Which of these have you yet to visit? Add that shop to your rainy or snowy day refuge list.
