Memorial Day is quickly approaching! This three-day weekend offers the chance to honor those who fought so bravely for our country and spend a little extra time with our families. For many, Memorial Day also marks the unofficial start of summer, and here in Omaha, we like to celebrate the momentous occasion with live music, farmers’ markets, community festivals and memorial ceremonies to remember our fallen heroes.

The Big Ten Baseball Tournament | Omaha

When: May 23 to May 27

This legendary baseball palooza has been a staple on Omaha’s annual calendar of events since its debut in 2014. The 2018 Big Ten Baseball Tournament invites the iconic Big Ten (historic rivalries and all) to compete at TD Ameritrade Park. The winners will return to Omaha to compete for the NCAA College World Series in June, so come cheer on your favorites!

 

La Vista Salute to Summer Festival | La Vista

There’s no better way to celebrate the beginning of summer than with this annual La Vista festival! The event kicks off with a grand parade (complete with dancing and local marching bands), and will be followed with a community cookout, live concert and fireworks.

 

Turner Park Night Market | Omaha

When: May 25, 6-10 pm
Where: Midtown Crossing

On the last Friday of the month from May to September, local vendors will gather for a Night Market at Turner Park! The event is meant to serve as a community gathering place, so bring your friends and family to enjoy the selection of eclectic vendors, delicious food and live music.

Loessfest originated just five years ago in 2013, but has already grown into one of the largest and most highly anticipated music festivals in the region. It takes place annually on Memorial Day Weekend at Tom Hanafan River’s Edge Park, and serves as a celebration of Council Bluffs and the surrounding area! Watch choppers fly over the horizon and land on the grounds in front of you! Law enforcement pilots, private pilots and the Nebraska National Guard will collaborate to land with a UH-72 Lakota, UH-60 Black Hawk and CH-47 Chinook. After they land, spectators can meet with the pilots to learn about their careers and about the specific aircraft. Inside, enjoy family-friendly activities, arts and crafts, and thrilling exhibits!

 

Kids Jamboree at NEX | Gretna

Where: The Nebraska Crossing Outlets

Families with young children will love the Kids Jamboree! This family-friendly festival occurs on select Saturdays throughout the summer at the Nebraska Crossing Outlets, and features live entertainment, face painting, balloon animals, magicians, stilt walkers, sweet treats and more! Come on Memorial Day weekend for patriotic festivities.

 

The 2nd Annual Food Truck Extravaganza | Omaha

Brews & BBQ Tour | Omaha

Where: Brickway Brewery & Distillery

Omaha is climbing the charts as one of the best craft beer cities in the midwest, and it has always been known for its fantastic barbecue! The two will collide at this unique tour, which allows ticket-holders to visit three different breweries and visit a local barbecue joint for some delicious eats. The 2nd Annual Summer Kickoff Music Festival | Omaha

The Blues Society of Omaha wants to give summer a true welcome, and will do so at this fantastic music festival on the riverfront. Enjoy a full evening of live music, delicious food from local vendors, and a spectacular fireworks show to end the night.

This fun yoga class is led each week by the area’s most inspiring yoga teachers, and caters to beginners and advanced yogis alike! Come practice with your friends and family, and enjoy performances from local artists and musicians. The class is free, but a $5 donation is encouraged. All proceeds will benefit Gift of Sight, a nonprofit that combats unnecessary blindness across the globe.

 

U.S. Bank Family FUNday at Werner Park | Omaha

Celebrate Memorial Day with the Omaha Storm Chasers as they face off against Round Rock Express! Come early and play a fun game of catch on the field before the game begins, and stay late to enjoy a spectacular post-game fireworks show.

Every year on Memorial Day, we honor all of the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country at an inspiring ceremony at Memorial Park. The service starts at 11 am, and is hosted by the Heroes of the Heartland Foundation.
