A Visitors Guide to Omaha

Here in Omaha, we’re famous for a few things. We have steaks; we have music; and we have one amazing bridge. While you can’t come to our city without experiencing a few of those, there are quite a few other secrets only the locals know.

A short trip in Omaha can be made amazing if you know the ins and outs and the must-sees of our awesome city. If you’re coming for a visit, or even thinking about relocating here some day, we’ve compiled a list of everything you need right here: things to see, eat, drink and experience. So get ready to plan the best Omaha weekend ever, whether you’re alone or with the whole family!

Where to Stay

Omaha is a place for families, couples and single adventurers alike. There are a lot of options when it comes to places to stay, and we have a comprehensive list of our favorite here: Best places to stay in Omaha. If you’re one of those adventurous types, you may even want to check out our list of the best Omaha Airbnb options!

However, if you’re interested in a more luxurious experience, Hotel Deco may be for you. It has beautiful art deco designs, rich amenities and it’s perfectly located in downtown Omaha. In fact, the hotel even offers complimentary Mercedes-Benz luxury Sedan transportation (within 3 miles), so you can ride around in style.

Magnolia Hotel is another great option, and one of our favorites! This historic hotel boasts vintage, boutique-style rooms and it’s located right down the street from Old Market. Since Old Market boasts a variety of shopping and dining options, you’ll be able to conveniently walk and explore the area from your hotel room.

If you’re looking for a quieter atmosphere, there are several bed and breakfasts in town. Check out the historic Cornerstone Mansion or the peaceful and romantic White Deer Retreat!

What to See

Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge: Often referred to just as “Bob,” this pedestrian bridge connects the heart of Omaha to Council Bluffs, Iowa. There is a mark in the middle of the bridge where you can stand in both states at the same time, so it’s basically a mandatory photo opp while in Omaha. Visiting the bridge in the evening is also fun, as it’s completely lit up providing an amazing view of the Omaha skyline and the Missouri river.

A Local Music Show: Omaha is famous around the nation for its thriving music scene. Whether you’re into small, intimate venues or larger shows with famous headliners, we have a bit of both and everything in between. The Waiting Room, Slowdown and The Down Under Lounge are all right in Downtown Omaha and have live music throughout the week. It’s a must to get out there and experience the music Omaha has to offer!

Old Market: With brick paved roads, Old Market is historic meets adventurous. Always growing and thriving, it’s right at the heart of downtown and is filled with character and social experiences, whether you’re looking for something to do, something to buy, or just somewhere to explore and people watch. Check out Places to Go in Omaha’s Old Market!

Boys Town Tour: As a history buff, you may want to take a tour of Boys Town while you’re here. Dating Omaha back to 1921, Father Flanagan provided shelter for many homeless boys in the area. His work spread worldwide, and eventually brought the success of the 1938 movie, “Boys Town,” which won an Academy Award.

Birthsite of Malcolm X: While the home is no longer there, you can visit the birthplace of civil rights leader Malcolm X. A monument marks his birthplace in the grassy 12-acre area in north Omaha. And, it’s completely free!

What to Eat

While in Omaha, eat like the Omahans, right? That means there are a few places and a couple meals you cannot miss. Below are a few area staples, including places you can find our famous steaks and reubens. If brunch is more your style, read through Best Places to Brunch in Omaha!

Breakfast: Overeasy and 11 Worth Cafe are local favorites for breakfast. Overeasy is a beautiful place boasting local and fresh food, while 11 Worth is a classic cafe serving up large, delicious portions.

Lunch: Le Bouillon serves French-inspired comfort food with Omaha style. Big Mama’s Kitchen is the place to go for southern soul food, with a Fried Catfish Filet to die for.

Here are a few of our other favorites:

Spezia is the place to go in Omaha for a beautifully crafted reuben, or you can try any of their delicious Italian dishes. The Grey Plume serves up farm-to-table food in Omaha style. Their menu changes as produce and livestock is available in the area so you’re sure to get the best of Omaha no matter which season you stop by.

Where to Grab a Drink

With a growing downtown, there’s no shortage of places to grab a drink and find a unique experience at the same time. Below are our favorite places in the area where you can taste a craft beer, an artful cocktail, or a bit of both!

Wicked Rabbit: Omaha’s first speakeasy bar and cocktail lounge. This is a must-see if you’re looking for a fun time and a great drink! Also, it’s conveniently located inside Hotel Deco downtown!

Krug Park: Named after a historical amusement park meets beer garden, Krug Park is most popular for its craft beer selection. However, they have a special place in their hearts for Bloody Marys; you can’t miss out on their 13 variations!

The Berry and Rye: In the heart of Old Market, The Berry and Rye finds inspiration from Pre-Prohibition style cocktails and adds a modern, experimental twist. They craft their own ice and make sodas, syrups and bitters in house. While these artful cocktails take a little longer to prepare than you may be used to, each one is worth the wait!

The Tavern: The Tavern serves up delicious drinks alongside live music, art, poetry and live DJs. A local drink spot for every working man, they claim unpretentiousness and a comfortable atmosphere.

The Homy Inn: This laid-back neighborhood “dive bar” is a must-visit if you’re a Champagne lover! They offer a unique atmosphere, but the main attraction is four different types of Champagne on tap, as well as Sangria.

What to do with Kids

Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium: The Omaha Zoo is regularly awarded the best zoo in the country with several achievements in the entire continent. With or without kids, the 130 acres of gardens and exhibits is a must-see. However, the kids will especially love all the interactive feedings and shows throughout the day. At Red Barn Park they can dig, play, learn and interact with various animals!

Omaha Children’s Museum: The children’s museum is packed with fun and adventure for various age groups. Everyone can enjoy making art at the Creative Arts Center and getting hands on in the Maker-Space. Even toddlers and babies can learn and play in the Imagination Playground. Bring everyone along for an educational trip!
