Why You Should Move to the Aksarben Neighborhood in Omaha

The city of Omaha is woven together by our local neighborhoods, each showcasing different personalities that contribute to the overall spirit of our region. And although there’s no wrong answer when it comes to choosing where to live, there are several neighborhoods that are on the rise! One of these is Aksarben — a unique community of shops, restaurants, bars, green spaces and very friendly neighbors. It’s not only an incredible place to call home, but also a fun place to spend the day!

We rounded up the best things to do in the area, including fun activities, restaurants, events and more so you can see what all the fuss is about. We think you’ll love it just as much as we do!

The History of Aksarben

Let’s start with a little history! In 1895, a group of Omaha businessmen formed an organization to promote cultural, agricultural, civic and educational enrichment in the Omaha area. They decided to call it Aksarben (which is “Nebraska” spelled backward, by the way), and it was immediately successful! The group purchased 200 acres near Elmwood Park in the early 1900s, which soon housed modest properties of brick and stucco, a racetrack, barns and more. Since then, those 200 acres have developed to include lush parks, upscale apartments, office and retail buildings, the UNO Engineering Campus, top-notch restaurants and so much more — and it only continues to grow!

The sport of curling requires a high level of precision and concentration, but it’s also really fun! You don’t have to be a professional to try it for yourself — just head over to the Aksarben Curling Club. The club, founded in 1958, caters to curlers of all levels. There are beginner-friendly leagues throughout the year, classes, workshops and more. Grab a few friends and try something new this weekend!

Enjoy a Show at Aksarben Cinema

Aksarben Cinema is the best place to see the latest blockbuster. Not only is is an impeccably maintained theater — but it also offers specials every now and then to enjoy discounted movies (for instance, $5 Tuesdays). Plus, there is a bar on site that allows you to grab a beer or a cocktail to enjoy during the film!

Sit at the Bar at Spirit World

Spirit World has been serving the Omaha area for more than 40 years as a locally-owned specialty liquor store and cafe. You can stop in and grab a bottle of something special to share with loved ones at home, or you can snag a seat at the bar to enjoy a cocktail after work! We also recommend snagging one of the small plates to accompany your beverage of choice — the food here is delicious.

Indulge in a Sweet Treat at Jones Brothers

When your sweet tooth starts acting up, head over to Jones Brothers! The dessert shop is famous for its gourmet cupcakes, but in addition to the daily cupcake specials, the menu also includes coffee, pastries, frozen yogurt and more. If you’re looking for something savory, you can also enjoy a delicious selection of sandwiches and soups, as well as a wine menu!

Play a Game of Frisbee at Stinson Park

Stinson Park is the heart and soul of Aksarben. The park hosts outdoor concerts, open-air markets and free park workouts throughout the year, but when events aren’t happening, it’s a wonderful place to simply relax and spend time outdoors. Bring a good book or a frisbee and enjoy the sunshine!

Eat a New American Meal at Beacon Hills

Located in the heart of Aksarben Village, Beacon Hills is one of the most popular gathering places in the neighborhood! You can expect scratch-made American cuisine with Midwestern flavors and contemporary twists — and everything on the menu is filled with flavor.

Sip on a Craft Cocktail at Herbe Sainte

Herbe Sainte is a local treasure with New Orleans flair and a well-stocked bar. The bartenders design the cocktail menu to be delightful and exciting but are experienced enough to be able to create something custom on the fly for their patrons. After ordering your craft cocktail of choice, dive into a plate of freshly shucked oysters or indulge in a Creole-inspired meal.
